I grew up in Algonac, Michigan. It was a very small town of about 2,000 people. So you basically ended up going to school with the same 30 kids until Jr. High when the local area elementary schools all merged. One of the things that really stands out in my memories as kid, were marbles. Marbles were something we played at recess pretty much every day that it didn't rain or snow. I remember the real cool kids carried their marbles in a Purple Crown Royal bag. Most of the rest of us used different sizes of blue Maxwell House Coffee cans. Somewhere along the line I got a canning jar with a locking top because there were two rules that scared every kid — if you got caught chewing gum in class, you'd better have a stick of gum for everyone AND if you dropped your marbles on the classroom floor, they became Mr. Furman's -- PERIOD!

One day the worst thing you could imagine happened. Ted had the biggest Maxwell House can just packed of marbles. I probably had more marbles than all of the rest of the kids put together. The can was sitting on the edge of his desk which of course got bumped. I don't remember who pushed who, but Ted's Maxwell House can hit the floor and hundreds of marbles went shooting out in all directions. I still remember that sound and the look on Mr. Furman's f ace when he stopped writing on the blackboard and turned around looking over his chromed glasses at Ted. Ted turned white!
