  1. Melt the butter in a heavy soup pot. Add the onions, carrots, and celery. Cook until just soft. Whisk in the flour and cook 5 minutes. Add the broth and stir until well mixed. Bring to just under a boil.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients, reduce heat and simmer 45 minutes. Serve warm.
